Doyle and Kelly goals see St Joseph’s past battling Clonaslee St Manman’s

St Joseph’s 2-10 Clonaslee St Manman’s 0-8
Senior Football Championship Round 1

Goals in either half from Dylan Doyle and James Kelly saw St Joseph’s open their Laois SFC campaign with a hard-fought win over Clonaslee-St Manman’s on Sunday evening.

The final margin probably flattered the Kellyville side a little, as Clonasee were just two behind going into the last ten minutes. However, St Joseph’s had a bit more in the tank down the stretch, with James Kelly’s excellent goal in the 54th minute all but sealing the win.

Clonaslee had made the brighter start, with Laois goalkeeper Niall Corbet launching over a point after just 21 seconds. He added another from a free soon after as St Joseph’s took their time to get acclimated to the game, and they almost found themselves a goal down to boot.

A lovely deft pass sent Liam Senior through on goal for Clonaslee in the seventh minute and despite getting a good shot away, Aaron Cooney was on hand to make a brilliant save.

St Joseph’s finally opened their account in the ninth minute when James Kelly came up from full-back to stroke over a 45. They were soon two points behind again however, thanks to a brilliant long-range score from Jack Owens as Clonaslee set the early pace.

St Joseph’s needed something to spur them into life and it arrived in the 12th minute thanks to talented youngster Oisín Hooney. There didn’t look like there was a lit on when he gained possession in the right corner, but made space for himself and managed to get a pass across the face of goal, where Dylan Doyle was on hand to fist the ball to the net.

Adam Campion then landed a fine score from the left wing and St Joseph’s went from two points down to two points ahead in the space of three minutes, with Niall Corbet getting a point back for Clonaslee just before the water break.

They then drew themselves level on the resumption of play thanks to a left-footed effort from Diarmuid Conroy, but Matthew Campion soon had St Joseph’s back in front.

James Kelly doubled their lead with a long-range free but James McRedmond managed to squeeze a shot between the posts from a really narrow angle in the 27th minute to make it a one point game once more. Another point apiece for each side left just a point between them at the interval, 1-5 to 0-7 the score.

The second half started out as a low-scoring affair, with the first real chance coming in the second minute when Bob Downey’s shot for goal was blocked on the line by James Kelly.

We had to wait for the 38th minute to see the first score when Josh O’Brien landed a free, but Niall Corbet hit back for Clonaslee with a point from play, his fifth score of the game.

Brian Daly then saw his effort for goal cannon off the post but a Dylan Doyle point had St Joseph’s two ahead at the second water break, 1-7 to 0-8.

St Joseph’s started to turn the screw a bit after that and Clonaslee had no response for them. It started with a point from sub Seamus Farrelly, who tapped over after Jason Campion’s effort for goal hit the post. That was all before a well-worked team goal from St Joseph’s all but settled the game.

Jason Campion’s clever cross-field ball found Danny Hickey and he timed his pass to the in-rushing James Kelly perfectly, with Kelly rifling a shot into the roof of the net.

Kelly added a 45 moments later and that made it a seven point game with just five minutes to go.

Clonaslee battled on manfully but couldn’t find another score, as Brian Daly’s superb point from range in the final minute of normal time sealed the win for St Joseph’s.
