Portarlington imperious once again but injuries overshadow league final clinching win

Portarlington 3-12 St Joseph’s 0-7
ACFL Division 1A Semi-final

Portarlington continued their fine form with a 14-point victory over St Joseph’s this evening to seal a Division 1A league final place.

However, manager Martin Murphy will be left sweating on the fitness of a number of key players who sustained injuries in the game.

Corner back Dean Foster lasted less than a minute and his colleague Alex Mohan also departed before half time after he was hurt follow a late tackle.

A second half tangle off the ball left Rioghan Murphy hobbling off. And his departure came just minutes after Port lost influential defender Paddy O’Sullivan to what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

With just two weeks until the 2020 championship semi final with Ballyfin, Portarlington will be hoping none of those players will miss that game.

As regards this evening’s affair, the match was a contest for the first quarter with the home side absolutely dominating after that to win with relative ease.

Colm Murphy got proceedings underway with a point before Matty Campion soon replied with one.

The opening moments of the game were very cagey as both defences were on top.

The teams continued to exchange points as Seamus Farrelly and Colm Murphy pointed for their sides.

Portarlington finished the first quarter with two in a row via Jake Foster and Scott Osbourne (45) – 0-4 to 0-2.

Portarlington then scored 1-1 after the water break to put them further ahead.

Ronan Coffey played a ball into Colm Murphy and his shot hit the crossbar. The ball rebounded to Rioghan Murphy and he placed the ball soccer-style into the net.

St Joseph’s responded well with a brace of points through Dylan Doyle and Brian Daly.

But Portarlington soon replied with another goal. Ronan Coffey was fouled in the box and he was awarded a penalty.

Coffey then dispatched the penalty and sent the ball into the bottom corner.

Colm Murphy scored a brace just before half time to give them a nine point lead – 2-7 to 0-4.

Dylan Doyle and David Murphy exchanged points on the resumption of play before David Murphy scored Portarlington’s third goal of the game.

Colm Murphy and Jake Foster combined before the former set up David Murphy to give his side a fourteen point lead at the second water break.

The game was certainly out of sight for St Joseph’s when Adam Campion was sent off for an off the ball incident involving Eoin McCann on the resumption of play.

David Murphy scored two points late on in and although St Joseph’s ended the game with scores from Josh Lacey and Matty Campion, Port were worthy winners.
