WATCH: Penalty shoot-out drama as Laois minors see off Wexford following marathon encounter

The Laois minor footballers advanced to the Leinster quarter finals following a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Wexford this afternoon.

Mark Bates’ charges will now face Louth in the quarter finals on July 10 – the latter overcoming Westmeath today.

This was the third penalty shoot out that a Laois team has been involved in since they were introduced to GAA in 2019.

The first was in the Leinster club championship where Portlaoise defeated St Pat’s of Navan in November 2019.

The second was last February when the Laois U-20s required penalties to get the better of Westmeath.

And today’s success means that Laois teams maintain a 100% record whenever a game is decided by spot kicks.

The game itself was incredibly dramatic with two red cards, late scores and some controversial refereeing decisions.

When it came to the shoot out, Laois keeper Conor Brown took centre stage.

He took the first penalty and pinged it into the top corner. Tomas Mythen replied for Wexford before Graiguecullen’s Conor Harte became the first to miss as his shot went over the bar.

But Brown came good again to deny Darby Purcell before Aaron Dorgan, who had so harshly had a last minute free given against him scored calmly.

Conor Kelly levelled it at 2-2 before Cormac Murphy made it 3-2 to Laois.

Eoin Whelan and Daniel McGrath both scored leaving Wexford’s Sean Hughes needing to score to bring the penalties to sudden death.

But Brown was the hero as he made yet another save.
