St Brigid’s 3-14 Graiguecullen 1-6
2020 U-16 ‘B’ Ladies Football Final

The first of the long awaited 2020 U-16 ladies football championship finals took place today at in Annanough between St Brigids and Graiguecullen.

And it was a day to remember for St Brigid’s as Saoirse Byrne helped herself to 2-3 and Shauna Kealy hit 0-5 in an impressive team performance.

Graiguecullen remained scoreless up until the first water break due to playing against a very strong wind in the opening half.

St Brigid’s started extremely strong following the throw in and Emma Phelan opened the scoring with a fine point after the first minute.

Graiguecullen were unlucky on a number of occasions not to score but the wind and excellent defending from Maeve Gallagher and Kate Byrne made it extremely difficult for them to do so.

Some magnificent movement of the ball from Fiona Fennessy, Maeve Gallagher, Emma Hickey and Saoirse Byrne lead to Byrne slotting the ball over the bar for her first point of the game.

An outstanding run from midfield from Fiona Fennessy saw her cut through the Graiguecullen defense and rattle the bottom right corner of Keating’s net for St Brigid’s first goal of the game.

Emma Hickey found herself in on goal shortly after but Orla Keating made sure it wasn’t getting past her with an impressive save.

Captain Ella Byrne opened Graiguecullen’s scoring after 24 minutes with a well needed score.

Just before half time, Gallagher won the oppositions kick out and nicely slotted the ball off to Saoirse Byrne who broke through the Graiguecullen defense and made no mistake in scoring Brigid’s second goal to leave them well in control and leading 2-9 to 0-1 at half time.

Shauna Kealey opened the scoring for Brigid’s a minute into the second half with a lovely strike off her left boot. Moments after, Saoirse Byrne gained possession of the ball once again and made an incredible run towards goal and secured her second goal of the game.

Ella Byrne covered every blade of grass with her runs up and down the field and after 61 minutes she scored an incredible goal for her team’s first and only goal of the game.

Graiguecullen’s Abigail O Brien and her back line worked tirelessly throughout the entire game and overturned numerous balls, but St Brigid’s proved too strong.

St Brigid’s dominance was displayed very early in the game and lasted the entire 60+ minutes.
