Late surge reinvigorates All-Ireland camogie charge as Laois down Tipperary

The Laois camogie team are back in the running for an All-Ireland quarter final place following a dramatic comeback victory over Tipperary in Drom and Inch this afternoon.

John Desmond’s side looked down and out as they trailed by three points as the game headed for injury time but two late goals saw them win.

It is a crucial victory as it now means that should they draw or defeat Kerry next weekend, they will be guaranteed a place in the last eight of the competition.

The opening quarter was a tense affair with both sides fully aware of the magnitude of the game.

Courtney Ryan gave Tipperary the lead early on but Camross’ Aimee Collier responded.

Sinead Meagher once again edged the home side ahead but Collier’s second free after 11 minutes tied the game once again.

However, just on the stroke of the water break, Tipperary scored again through Andrea Loughnane to move 0-3 to 0-2 in front.

When play resume, Laois struck the lead for the first time as full forward Grainne Hyland scored a brilliant goal.

Aimee Collier pushed Laois three clear with her third free of the game but Tipperary came roaring back through Jenny Grace and Meagher.

Collier pushed Laois on again with a 45 and then had the chance to score her side’s second goal when they were awarded a penalty.

But her effort came back off the crossbar and Tipperary cleared it to safety.

Sinead Meagher brought the half to a conclusion with her third point as Laois took a 1-4 to 0-6 lead into half time.

Andrea Loughnane briefly levelled matters on the resumption but two more frees from Collier moved Laois two clear again.

Courtney Ryan replied for Tipperary and then disaster struck for Laois after 40 minutes when Deirdre John crashed in a goal to put Tipperary ahead for the first time in almost half an hour.

Collier struck back with her sixth point but Sinead Meagher scored her fourth to leave Tipperary 1-9 to 1-7 up at the second water break.

Collier narrowed the gap to one as play resumed but a quick brace from Jenny Grace left three between them as we entered the final five minutes of normal time.

It stayed like that until the first minute of injury time. Collier struck another free and then sub Cathy Galbriath scored Laois’s second goal.

Laois now led and instead of sitting back and trying to defend, they went for more scores.

Jessie Quinlan scored a great point and then full forward Grainne Hyland fired in her second goal to leave five in it at the finish.
