Laois star named in the GAA Hurling Team of the Week for the second week running

Laois hurler Paddy Purcell has been rewarded for his fine performance against Waterford on Saturday with a place on this GAA Hurling Team of the Week.

This is the second consecutive time the Rathdowney-Errill man has made the hurling team of the week.

Purcell scored 1-4 against Waterford which saw him named in midfield in the team this week.

Purcell reeled off four points in quick succession in the first half before he scored a fantastic goal in the second.

Midway through the third quarter, Fiachra C-Fennell found Paddy Purcell with an inside pass and Purcell shrugged off several defenders to rattle the net.

The scored reduced the gap to four points and Laois had all the momentum.

They actually took the lead with the final puck of the quarter as Cha Dwyer caught a high ball and flicked it out to Ciaran Comerford who scored.

Laois stayed ahead until the 61st minute when Waterford’s Patrick Curran got through for a goal.

The game was still in the balance in the third minute of injury time but Waterford avoided a shock as Stephen Bennett got in to score the game winning goal.

Purcell will be hoping to make it three in a row when Laois face Westmeath in the final game of 2021 on Saturday evening.
