Disappointing start for Laois in camogie opener as Derry prove too strong

Laois 0-10 Derry 1-19
All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie Championship Group 3 Round 1

Laois have made a disappointing start to the All-Ireland Intermediate Camogie championship after they were beaten by Derry in O’Moore Park this afternoon.

John Desmond’s side will now have to defeat Tipperary and Kerry in the remaining two games to have a chance of reaching the quarter finals.

The game got off to a slow start as both teams hit multiple wides.

Aine McCallister then got the game’s first score when she converted a free from close range with Sinead Mellon pointing soon after to give Derry an early lead.

Eimear McGuigan made it three before Laois scored their first of the game after ten minutes when Alice Walsh’s shot sailed straight over the black spot.

This seemed to spur Laois on as points from Aimee Collier and Sara Cuddy levelled the game before a Clodagh Tynan free gave them a lead for the first time after 14 minutes

However, Derry did level matters just before the water break as Shannon Graham pointed to leave it 0-4 a piece at that stage.

Derry began to dominate the game after the interval and scored 1-1 in quick succession to pull clear of Laois.

The first goal of the game saw Aine McCallister and Shannon Graham combine before the latter played a ball across the box to Aoife Shaw who controlled it on her hurl before volleying it into the roof of the net.

Aimee Collier and Sinead Mellon swapped points before Aine McGill and Aine McCallister put the visitors further ahead to leave six points between the sides – 1-8 to 0-5 at half time.

Similar to the first half, Aine McCallister got the second half have underway with a free and then soon added another.

Aimee Collier and Shannon swapped points as Derry continued to maintain their lead over Laois.

A high ball was then played into Aoife Shaw and she rose hight to catch it. She turned her marker and was bearing in on goal but Aedin Lowry came racing out and made a fantastic save to keep Laois in the game.

Jackie Donnelly extended Derry’s lead but a fourth Collier free reduced the margin to eight at the second water break – 1-12 to 0-7.

Laois needed a big final quarter to have any chance but aside from Collier frees, they just couldn’t close the gap any further as Derry ran out convincing winners.
