Borris-Kilcotton too strong for Abbeyleix to claim Division 1A final place

ACHL Division 1A Semi-final

Borris-Kilcotton are through to the Division 1A league final following an eight point win over Abbeyleix this afternoon.

Ciaran Comerford’s charges are warming up nicely for their 2020 championship final against Clough-Ballacolla which takes place in three weeks time.

These sides will meet again later this year in the group stages of the 2021 championship and Lorcan Mahony can be content with the way his side competed for large parts of the encounter.

There was only five in it at half time as a Joe Campion goal proved the decisive score in the opening period.

PJ Scully, fresh from his exploits with Laois last night, was flawless on frees but he saw a penalty after 12 minutes saved by inter-county colleague Enda Rowland.

Abbeyleix midfielder Fionan Mahony was electric in the first half with four of his five points – all of which came from play – arriving then.

Nevertheless, Borris-Kilcotton took a 1-9 to 0-7 lead into the half time break and they built upon that on the resumption.

Second half goals from Aaron Dunphy and Stephen Dunphy helped Borris-Kilcotton build up an unassailable lead.

Abbeyleix did rattle the net near the end as keeper Enda Rowland drove home a close range free but it did not change the outcome.

Borris-Kilcotton will now play the winners of Rathdowney-Errill and Camross – who clash later tonight – in the final.
