‘Virtual celebrations’ planned for Africa Day Laois 2021

Laois County Council together with Laois African Support Group will celebrate Africa Day from Monday June 14 to Saturday June 19.

Although they cannot celebrate in person, organisers will mark the occasion virtually.

Africa Day is an initiative of the African Union, which celebrates African diversity and success and the cultural and economic potential of the continent.

Laois County Council together with Laois African Support Group is among a number of organisations around the country that have been supported by Irish Aid, the Government’s overseas aid programme, managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to host Africa Day events this year.

This year they will celebrate the vibrant cultural heritage of Africa and the contribution made to Irish Society by African communities and people of African descent.

You can join in the virtual celebrations throughout the week on their Facebook page.

Here, they will showcase culture and heritage on all form through music, dance, arts/crafts, attire, poetry, spoken word, food display and much more.

Organisers say: “We are looking for storytellers, dancers, DJs drummers, spoken word artist and more.

“Make a video under 3 minutes and send it to us on info@laoisafrica.com.”
