Mountrath 6-4 Park-Ratheniska-Timahoe 0-16
2020 U-13 ‘B’ Hurling Championship Final
There was heartbreak for Park-Ratheniska-Timahoe and elation for Mountrath at full time in the Centre of Excellence tonight following a dramatic 2020 U-13 ‘B’ hurling final.
The game looked to be heading for extra time when PRT wing forward Matthew Cunningham stroked over his tenth point of the evening to level the game on the stroke of full time.
However, Mountrath’s Josh Dempsey had other ideas and he struck for two dramatically late goals – completing his hat-trick and sealing victory for his side in what was a brilliant game.
It is a victory that completes a simply remarkable 2020 season for all involved in juvenile hurling in Mountrath.
Last September, they defeated Ballinakill-Ballypickas to claim minor ‘B’ glory. They had to wait until Saturday to win the U-15 ‘B’ crown – defeating tonight’s opponents in that one too.
Zach Maguinness, Josh Dempsey, Ruaidhri Kavanagh, Donnachadh Carroll and Sean Doheny-Foot all played in that U-15 success from two days ago and played once again tonight.
Ruaidhri Kavanagh, son of Trumera goalkeeper Ronan Kavanagh, is an excellent hurler and finished this game with 3-2 despite being double marked by Robbie Murphy and either Barry Connolly or Daniel Downey throughout.
Those players actually did really well to limit Kavanagh to that score too – because every time he got the ball they did their best to bottle him up.
Park-Ratheniska-Timahoe began the game with the wind and fired early points through Cunningham and Declan Fingleton.
But Kavanagh showed his class after three minutes when he soloed through the PRT defence and smashed a shot to the corner of the net.
Josh Dempsey and Daniel Downey added points for Mountrath but Park-Ratheniska-Timahoe did not drop their heads as three scores from Cunningham and another from Liam Dermody gave them a 0-6 to 1-2 lead at the water break.
Kavanagh turned the style on again on the resumption as he hit a point and then followed that with a brilliant goal following a great pass by Donnachadh Carroll.
But once again, led by the flawless free-taking of Cunnigham, Park-Ratheniska-Timahoe came back as he hit three in a row with Declan Fingleton and Tom Fingleton also scoring.
Mountrath almost got a third goal before half time following a solo run by Josh Dempsey but Paul Byrne got back to clear as PRT took a 0-11 to 2-3 lead into half time.
Mountrath instantly re-took the lead at the start of the new half as Kavanagh turned provider this time to set up Dempsey for his first goal of the evening.
But again Park-Ratheinska-Timahoe responded really well to the set back as Cunnigham, Declan Fingleton and the brilliant Ethan Kelly gave them the lead once again at the second water break – 0-14 to 3-3.
Matthew Cunningham made it a three point game but Ruaidhri Kavanagh came to life once again 10 minutes from time as he completed his hat-trick and fired over a free to give Mountrath a one point lead.
It remained like that until Matthew Cunningham converted yet another free to tie the game for the final time. But from the resulting puck-out, the ball broke to Josh Dempsey as he charged towards goal.
His first shot was saved by keeper Jack Dermody but he somehow managed to find the top corner with the rebound as the sliotar was almost on the endline.
PRT now needed a goal to force extra time but it was Mountrath who won the resulting puck-out as Dempsey charged forward again to complete his hat-trick and send yet another trophy to Mountrath.
