Laois 1-9 Wexford 7-19
National Camogie League Division 2 Round 2
Wexford proved far too strong for Laois in O’Moore Park this afternoon – sending the hosts to a relegation playoff.
The visitors were winning senior All-Ireland titles as recently as 2012 and their class showed as they won with ease to reach the semi finals.
Laois will now face a relegation playoff with one of the other sides who finished bottom of the other groups.
Whoever loses that game will be relegated to Division 3 while the winner will retain their league status for another year.
Laois got off to a dreadful start as Wexford scored a goal with almost their first attack through Aoife Guiney.
They added a brace of points before Laois finally got off the mark through Aimee Collier.
The Camross forward was Laois’s top scorer on the day but Wexford’s half forward line all pointed before she did so again.
Clodagh Tynan then slotted a long range free and just before the first water break, Laois grabbed a goal.
Tynan’s long ball broke near the square and Grainne Hyland got a boot to it to leave it 1-8 to 1-3.
Collier added another free on the resumption but Laois’s revival was short lived as Ellen Roche converted a penalty and they added further points to lead 2-11 to 1-4 at half time.
Collier continued to add frees for Laois in the second half but Wexford added two more goals through Katriona Parrock and Katie Kirwan.
They led 4-15 to 1-6 at the final water break and sub Emma Dempsey helped herself to 2-2 after that to put a real gloss on the scoreline for the winners.
A tough day for Laois but there will be more important games to come in the weeks ahead.
