Laois to learn Leinster championship opponents tomorrow

The Laois senior hurlers and footballers will find out their Leinster championship opponents tomorrow morning when the draws are made on RTE Radio 1.

The GAA are holding the various provincial draws across RTE Radio and TV this Monday and Tuesday with the Munster hurling and football draws made on Radio 1’s Morning Ireland programme this morning.

The Connacht football championship draw will be made on the RTE Six One News this evening with the Ulster football draw on tomorrow evening.

It means that the Leinster draws are both on tomorrow morning.

Because the Laois footballers reached last year’s provincial semi-final, they have a bye to the quarter-final this year where they will be drawn against one of the opening round winners or the side that gets a bye.

They can’t be paired with Dublin, Meath or Kildare in the quarter-final as those counties are also seeded. Instead Laois will play one of Carlow, Wicklow, Wexford, Offaly, Westmeath, Longford or Louth.

This year’s All Ireland football championship will be straight knockout with no back door. Laois’s Leinster championship game is likely to be on the weekend of July 3-4 or July 10-11.

Before that, Laois will have three games in Division 2 South of the National Football League.

The official fixture details for the league are expected to be officially announced this week though it’s understood that Laois will begin with a trip to Ennis to take on Clare on the weekend of May 15-16. It’s believed their other two games – against Kildare and Cork – will be at home on the following two weekends.

The Laois hurlers, who will have Cheddar Plunkett at the helm again this year, will also learn their championship fate tomorrow morning.

With last year’s finalists Kilkenny and Galway seeded into the semi-finals, Laois will be in the quarter-final draw alongside Wexford, Dublin and Antrim.

Unlike the football championship there is a Qualifier system in place in hurling though it is pre-ordained in some way with the Leinster quarter-final losers playing each other in the first round – in a game that will also double up as the relegation playoff. The losers will be demoted to the Joe McDonagh Cup for 2022.

Laois will begin their league campaign on the week of May 8-9 where they will play five weeks in a row.

Again, the exact fixture details haven’t been confirmed but they do know that they are in a group alongside Kilkenny, Clare, Dublin, Antrim and Wexford.

All inter-county teams are permitted to resume training from today.

Next week the Coronavirus restrictions ease further with underage training allowed to resume as well as golf clubs being allowed to re-open.
