Laois hurlers handed tough draw in Leinster championship opener

The Laois hurlers will play Wexford in this year’s Leinster championship quarter-final.

The draw was made this morning on RTE Radio 1 with Dublin set to meet Antrim in the other quarter-final.

Should Laois win, they will meet Kilkennyin the semi-final. The winners of Dublin-Antrim will meet Galway in the semi-final.

Laois’s meeting with Davy Fitzgerald’s Wexford side will be their first championship meeting since 2017 when Wexford were 3-25 to 1-17 winners.

Unlike the football championship, there is a backdoor in the hurling with the Leinster quarter-final losers set to meet each other in a game that will also double up as the relegation playoff.

Though fixture details are yet to be finalised, it is likely that Laois will be in championship action on the weekend of June 26-27 or July 3-4.

Laois will begin their league campaign on the week of May 8-9 where they will play five weeks in a row.

Again, the exact fixture details haven’t been confirmed but they do know that they are in a group alongside Kilkenny, Clare, Dublin, Antrim and Wexford.
