Young Laois hurlers that aren’t on the county senior or U-20 panels but who may have the potential to make it in the coming years are also going to be catered for under a new athletic development plan being put in place by Laois GAA.
We reported on Saturday that a system is being put in place for footballers in the county – but something similar will also be rolled out for the hurling side.
In most cases it will mean that players who are no longer U-20 but who aren’t on the senior panel will be given a strength and conditioning programme and specific attention to help them make that step up to senior level.
Players who are no longer eligible for minor (U-17) but not with the U-20s will also be catered for.
Laois hurling committee chairman Mattie Collier has worked closely with Laois GAA Games Manager Mike Henchy to develop it for the county’s young hurlers.
“Players who take part will work closely with the coaching and games department of Laois GAA,” explains Mattie.
“The players progress will be closely monitored by senior manager Seamas Plunkett and U-20 manager Enda Lyons.
“The project has been developed by the Laois Coaching and Games department headed by Mike Henchy in conjunction with Laois County Board.
“I would like to stress that this athletic development programme is meant to compliment the work going on in the clubs in Laois.
“I would also like to particularly praise the work done by Mike Henchy and his staff.
“If players and clubs buy into this plan overall standards will improve for both club and county.”
