In Pictures: Laois GAA club reach out to the elderly in their area with lovely gesture

This is absolutely brilliant.

A Laois GAA club have reached out to all of those over the age of 60 with a lovely gesture.

On St Patrick’s Day, members of the Slieve Bloom GAA club called around to many people to give them gifts.

They put together 65 bags of cakes, biscuits, sweets, chocolates and buns.

Susan Holmes-Breen, one of the chief organisers, explained the reason behind the gesture.

She said: “We did it to wish them all a happy St Patrick’s Day and to let them know that the club is available to help them in any way needed.

“Each bag was delivered to each house and everyone that received a bag was very happy.

“We would like to encourage all clubs to take time out and visit the elderly.

“A little chat could mean the world to one person.”

Some of those visited included 97-year-old Jack Lowry and his wife Nora. Jack is the oldest man living in Slieve Bloom.

While 101-year-old Maggie Teaghan, the oldest lady in the community, also had a big smile on her face.
