Huge Laois involvement as Women’s National League set to get underway this weekend

The Women’s National League is set to get underway this weekend – and there is massive Laois representation across the teams.

This is the female equivalent of the League of Ireland and has grown in popularity immensely since it was set up in 2011 as a six-team competition.

Now, it contains nine teams and a total of seven players from Laois are spread among them.

The reigning champions are Peamount United from Dublin and they have Portarlington teenager and Republic of Ireland underage international Della Doherty in their ranks once again this season.

Wexford Youths have won the league more than anyone else – with four successes to date – and they have two Laois players.

Graiguecullen’s Kylie Murphy is their captain while Portlaoise’s Ciamh Gray (formerly Dollard) is the goalkeeper.

Those two teams are set to meet on the opening day of the season which is this Saturday at 4pm.

Emo’s Gillian Keenan played with Limerick outfit Treaty United last season – and she will wear the red and white once again this year.

And her side are set to face Bohemians this Saturday – where she will come up against another Laois woman.

Laois and Sarsfields footballer Clare Conlon has signed for the Dublin club this season and her presence in the 2pm clash will signal an all-Laois affair once again.

The remaining two Laois players have signed for Westmeath outfit Athlone Town.

Clonaslee’s Emily Corbet, another Irish underage talent, is set to battle for a place as a striker while a second Laois player signed for the club on transfer deadline day.

Timahoe and Laois Ladies footballer Mo Nerney. She started playing soccer with Portlaoise in 2014 in the KDFL, where she won 4 League titles, Cup title and 2 Shield titles.

In 2019 Mo captained Portlaoise to a Division 1 title and was named KDFL Division 1 Player of the year.

Mo is no stranger when it comes to scoring goals, she was top goal scorer for two years in a row in 2018 and 2019.
