Healy to have final swansong with Portlaoise as permission granted to play in intermediate decider

Cahir Healy will be able to line out for Portlaoise in the delayed 2020 Laois Premier Intermediate hurling final, despite having transferred to London club St Brendan’s.

After a decade of commuting from the UK, Healy will play his club GAA in London this year – but a Portlaoise appeal has been successful to allow him play in the 2020 re-fixed final against The Harps.

Initially it was thought that Healy wouldn’t be eligible after transferring but a Portlaoise sought clarification and the GAA’s Rules Advisory Committee have decided in recent days that Healy is entitled to complete the 2020 season with Portlaoise and also line out with his new club in London.

Portlaoise are due to take on The Harps in the 2020 final to see who will be promoted to senior for 2021.

Initially it was hoped that the delayed 2020 competitions – that include every Laois adult championship apart from intermediate football and Junior ‘C’ hurling – would be played in June/July ahead of the the start of the 2021 championships.

However, because of the ongoing Level 5 restrictions, the GAA have been unable to start the inter-county decision.

And with no timeline yet as to when restrictions will be eased, the GAA have yet to decide how to proceed with their competitions and if club should go before county like last season.

Originally the plan was for the county season to go first with the All Ireland finals in early July.

Portlaoise are seeking a third intermediate success in six seasons with Healy hoping to sign off on an incredible club and county career on a winning note.
