Second place for Laois athlete at Indoor Micro Meet

There isn’t much live sport to report on these days – but there was some over the weekend involving a Laois athlete.

St Abban’s AC’s Saragh Buggy competed in the Athletics Ireland national senior Indoor Micro Meet in Abbotstown over the weekend.

Due to constraints from Covid-19, the meeting was exclusively for carded athletes who have realistic hopes of qualifying for The European Indoor Championships or Olympic Games.

The Europeans are due take placed in Torun Poland from March 5 to 7.

Saragh competed in the Women’s Long Jump on Sunday where she required a new personal best to qualify for the European Championships next month.

After five fouls, her sixth and final jump saw her record 5.86 metres.

This left her in second place overall behind Sarah McCarthy of Mid Sutton AC who finished first in 5.94 metres – but also short of the qualifying standard which required a jump of 6.80 metres.

This was Saragh’s first time competing since last August.

That was at the National Track and Field championships in Santry where she won gold in the senior ladies triple jump and the long jump.
