A former Laois and Stradbally footballer has been appointed as the trainer of a Wicklow club for 2021.
Daragh McEvoy, who lives in Wicklow town and works as Garda in Ashford, is set to be involved with Aughrim GAA.
A talented underage footballer with Stradbally he played with Laois at all levels, including with the seniors in 2002 when he was only 20.
He won a senior medal with Stradbally in 2005 but his work brought him to Wicklow and he transferred to St Pat’s in Wicklow town where he lived in 2008.
He went on to win a senior title with his adopted club in 2012.
And his career came full circle in 2016 when he returned to Stradbally to win another county medal, coming on as a sub and playing a crucial role as they denied Portlaoise a 10th title in a row in one of the most dramatic county finals of all time.
His new club, Aughrim, who play at junior level in Wicklow, confirmed the news on their Facebook page.
They said: “Aughrim GAA club would like to formally announce Darragh McEvoy as trainer/selector for the coming year.
“Darragh, who originally hails from Stradbally in Laois won a SFC in 2005 and played all underage grades with Laois which culminated with the seniors in 2002 but his work as a guard brought him to Wicklow where he then won a SFC with St. Pats in 2012.
“In 2016 when he returned to Stradbally, he won his second SFC.
“Darragh has been involved with the underage teams in St. Pats over the past few years so he brings a lot of experience with him from his own playing days and hopefully this can help with the development of our own young team.
“When we eventually get back out on the pitch we believe Darragh will be a massive addition to our plans for the year.
“The club would like to wish Darragh and the lads all the best for the year ahead.”
