Peamount United made FAI Women’s Cup history on Saturday as they claimed the silverware by 6-0 against Cork City – the biggest ever winning margin of any team.
And among their ranks was Laois teenager Della Doherty who came off the bench to play in the final ten or so minutes of the final.
The win capped a remarkable season for the Dublin based club as they added to their earlier success in the league to complete the coveted double.
Peamount came into the game hoping to go third time lucky in three years in the decider, having lost the last two finals to Wexford Youths, and having not won the trophy since 2010.
But they did and the victory allows the Portarlington youngster to add another medal to her cabinet.
The victory caps what has been a fine year for Doherty on a personal level.
Back in July, she was shortlisted with two others for the Republic of Ireland Women’s U-16 Player of the Year Award.
While she was pipped by Kerryann Brown of Donegal for that award, to be nominated was a mark of her standing in the game.
The Colaiste Iosagain student, who previously played for Arlington AFC, plays as a defender – coming on at centre half on Saturday.
Doherty, along with Clonaslee youngster Emily Corbet, are both on the Republic of Ireland team that reached the Elite Phase of the U-17 European Championship Qualifiers.
They were due to play Denmark, Serbia and Austria in a tournament in March in order to reach this finals tournament in Sweden which was to be played in the summer.
But Covid-19 cancelled all of that and it remains to be seen if it will now be refixed.
However, for now, Doherty can enjoy her Christmas break and hope for more success in 2021. Well done Della!
