Laois man Diarmuid Mullins has guided Limerick minor hurlers to Munster championship glory this afternoon for the second year running.
Limerick were 2-22 to 0-25 winners over Tipperary after extra time in the Gaelic Grounds as they successfully defended the title they won in 2019.
The former Portlaoise GAA club man, who won All Ireland minor football titles with Laois in 1996 and 1997, has lived in Limerick for the past number of years where he is principal of the large Crescent Comprehensive secondary school.
Mullins is involved with the Mungret club on the outskirts of the city and has been over a number of GAA, rugby and soccer teams in Limerick.
Also part of Mullins’s backroom team are former Limerick hurlers Andrew O’Shaughnessy and Tommy Quaid.
His side, who had a comfortable win over Cork in the Munster semi-final, now go forward to play the reigning All Ireland champions Galway in the semi-final on the first weekend of January.
With Mullins also as manager, Limerick beat Clare in the 2019 Munster final before losing to Kilkenny in the All Ireland semi-final.
Limerick haven’t won an All Ireland minor title since 1984 though this was their fourth Munster success since 2013 and was their eighth final appearance in nine years.
The Leinster semi-final action today saw Offaly defeat Westmeath 2-18 to 1-8 to reach the provincial final for the first time since 2003. They will now play Kilkenny in the final after they saw off Wexford in the other semi-final on a score line of 0-23 to 1-14.
The Leinster final will be on that first weekend in January with the winners going straight through to the All Ireland final the following week.
