Huge investment in soccer in South Laois set to pay dividends

Three major investments in soccer clubs in South Laois will hopefully see the sport grow exponentially in the coming years.

So says Killeshin FC’s Ian McDonald, who is secretary of one of the three clubs that have seen their facilities transform in the last year.

Killeshin FC, St Patrick’s Boys and St Fiacc’s, who all play in the Carlow League, are upwardly mobile clubs.

Back in June, Killeshin began work to construct a brand new clubhouse and a FIFA approved floodlit 3G pitch – on their existing grounds.

This was completed in September and although the playing of matches has been curtailed due to Covid-19, teams have been training away.

At the same time in Graiguecullen, two more clubs were also making great strides.

St Patrick’s Boys have also installed a FIFA approved floodlit 3G pitch and are currently fundraising to put the finishing touches to their development. 

While also in Graiguecullen, St Fiacc’s have finally found a location for a permanent home as Laois County Council have leased them lands at Monure, Graiguecullen.

In total, Mr McDonald reckons around €1 million has been invested in soccer in South Laois.

He said: “There have been huge developments on soccer facilities in Graiguecullen/Killeshin parish in 2020.

“With both ourselves and St Pats Boys building full size FIFA 3G pitches, our new clubhouse and St Fiacc’s securing new grounds – it is an investment of over €1 million in one parish in soccer facilities.

“All of this in the year of a pandemic and several lockdowns.

“It demonstrates the value our community puts on soccer as a sporting/social outlet for all.”
