Former Laois manager takes Dublin club job while hurling selector heads to Leinster rival

A former Laois senior football manager has been appointed as boss of a club in Dublin.

St Joseph’s native Sean Dempsey will take over manager of Ballinteer St Johns.

They play in the Dublin senior football championship but failed to progress from their group this year following defeats to Na Fianna, St Judes and Lucan Sarsfields.

However, they remain at senior for 2021 as Dublin GAA opted against having relegation this season.

Dempsey was most recently in charge of Ferbane in Offaly – who he managed to championship glory in 2019.

Dempsey led Laois to All-Ireland minor glory in 2003 before winning Leinster titles at U-21 level in 2006 and 2007.

He then went on to manage Laois at senior level in 2009 and 2010.

Elsewhere, former Laois senior hurling coach and selector Niall Corcoran has joined Davy Fitzgerald at Wexford.

The highly sought former Galway-born Dublin defender was Laois coach working alongside Eddie Brennan the last two seasons.

The news follows Brennan’s decision to join Cuala as coach to John Twomey in 2021.

And Laois’s decision to appoint Seamus Cheddar Plunkett as the new manager – although his backroom team remains outstanding.
