Annual Portlaoise AC St Stephen’s Day 5km in aid of Cuisle Centre going ahead with a twist this year

The annual St Stephen’s Day 5km event held by Portlaoise Atheltics Club is going ahead this year – but in a very different way.

For the last number of years, people of all ages have got out to walk, run or jog the Christmas Day turkey off on December 26 in aid of the Cuisle Centre.

However, the Covid-19 pandemic has changed that this year with the majority of this edition having to take place online.

Club member Aengus Burke explained: “For non members we are asking people to please complete a virtual run or walk on Stephens Day and make a donation at the link below.

“Please feel free to WhatsApp pictures to 087-6100908 and we will post them up.

“To keep the tradition going club members will complete the normal route in small groups under strict Covid guidelines between 10 am and midday.

“More than ever the Cuisle Centre need all our support this year, please support our efforts.”

Another of the organisers, Aidan McCane said: “Cuisle is a registered charity based in Portlaoise offering professional support to anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis throughout the cancer journey.

“All funds raised by the Portlaoise AC will go to the centre to help with their running costs.

“Your support will mean a lot to both Portlaoise AC and the Cuisle Centre and we are, as always, most grateful for your generous support.”
