The draw for the semi finals of the Laois Shopping Centre senior football championships has taken place this evening.
For the first time since 2016, and for only the second time since 2006, Portlaoise will not be the winners of the Jack Delaney Cup as they were knocked out in the quarter finals.
Instead one of the four remaining teams will eventually be crowned winners.
No matter what happens, the Laois championship will see one club end a long wait or, in Ballyfin’s case, win a first ever senior title.
Portarlington, who are the 6/5 favourites, haven’t won nor been in a final since 2001, while Emo’s only senior success came in 1972 and you have to go back to 1965 for Graigue’s last senior win.
The draw is as follows:
Ballyfin v Portarlington
Emo v Graiguecullen
The clash of Ballyfin and Portarlington will be their first ever meeting in championship football.
While Graiguecullen and Emo met in Round 3 of last year’s championship which Graigue won 1-14 to 1-10.
Before the semi-final draw, Port were priced at 6/5 with Emo at 9/4, Graiguecullen at 7/2 and Ballyfin at 6/1.
Details on when these games will actually be played is still not confirmed but it is not envisaged that any club activity will take place until 2021 at the earliest.
In correspondence to clubs last week, Laois GAA secretary Niall Handy envisaged that the suspension of club activity would run until mid January or early February.
Whenever club activity does resume, it is set to be a very busy period.
Aside from intermediate football and junior ‘C’ hurling, all other adult competitions remain outstanding.
