Laois ladies football club set to reflect on lost loved ones with Remembrance Tree

A Laois Ladies football club is planning to erect a Remembrance Tree in an effort to give their community a chance to grieve for their loved ones after what has been a difficult Covid-hit year.

Crettyard Ladies, who reformed at the end of 2018, are the ones behind the iniative.

The tree will be placed at Newtown Cross in Crettyard and ribbons have been distributed to nearby shops.

People can purchase these and write the name of their loved one on them.

On Saturday December 12 at 3.30pm, club members will hang the ribbons on the tree, light it up and say some prayers.

Club member Eoin Delaney said: “A tree is being placed at Newtown Cross.

“Ribbons have been distributed to different stores throughout the parish and people can place the names of loved ones they would like to remember on the ribbon.

“The club will then place the ribbons on the tree.

“Prayers will be said on December 12 and then we will light the tree and hopefully have some carol singing rom the local schools.

“For the year that it has been, and with all the grief that has been in our area, we think it’s a lovely idea to try and bring some comfort to people.”

Ribbons will be available on the night and can be got from any committee member in advance.

Geneva Stores, Glanbia Crettyard, Crettyard Childcare Services, Castlecomer Post Office & Killleshin Stores will also have them. Everyone is welcome and all donations go towards Crettyard Ladies GFC.
