Portlaoise 8 Athy 7
Rugby – Leinster League Division 2A
The local rugby season got underway today when Portlaoise made the relatively short trip to Athy for the first game of the Division 2A league campaign.
A first half try from veteran Mark Sherlock as well as a penalty from the book of Niall Keenan helped Portlaoise to an 8-7 lead at the break.
On a horrible day, Portlaoise played with the wind in the second half, but despite the lion’s share of possession, and spending long spells deep in Athy territory they couldn’t get any further scores.
PORTLAOISE: Philip O’Brien; Ben Quinn, Armand Smit, Simon Williams, Iain Corrigan; Niall Keenan, Jack Reddin; Brian Flannery, Harry Lalor, Paddy Coss; Diarmuid Joyce, Mark Sherlock, Shane Reilly, Jason Holohan, Ross Cooper. Replacements: Philip Maguire, James Dowling, Lorcan Burke, Liam Og Lynch, Kevin Lynch, Robin Cooper
The Portlaoise ladies team, meanwhile, had a big 36-0 win over Greystones in Togher.
Tries from debutant Catherine Delaney, Jenny Keegan and Rachel Palmer, as well as a conversion from Palmer, helped Portlaoise to a 17-0 lead at the break.
Rosie Palmer crossed for a try early in the second half before Jenny Keegan got her second and Lynn O’Callaghan got Portlaoise’s sixth. Keegan converted two of them.
The Portarlington v Clane men’s game in Leinster League Division 3 didn’t go ahead.
