With the kids off school all this week some will more than likely spend time looking at their phones or iPads.
But despite the Coronavirus-related restrictions, there is still an opportunity to exercise and Laois footballer Colm Begley is behind a new app in the Republic of Ireland that will allow kids be active and encourage healthy eating and mindfulness.
The Healthy Kidz app, which has been used by schools in Northern Ireland for the past number of years, is free to download in the Republic at the moment and is specifically focused on being healthy and active over Halloween.
Parents can simply download an Activity Pack specific to their child’s age and kids get coins for each healthy activity recorded that go towards them creating their own avatar.
The categories for getting coins are broken down into sport, exercise, healthy eating and well-being.
“It’s all about being physically and mentally active in a positive way,” says Begley, who is involved with the Healthy Kidz business.
“Kids can sometimes be glued to their phones but we’re saying how can we use that in a positive way.”
The app has widespread use in schools across Northern Ireland and Begley is hoping to increase it use in primary schools here too.
“Designed and delivered by highly qualified, experienced and motivated teachers, coaches and health professionals our first of its kind software platform, will enable schools to accurately record and report on the health and wellbeing of their pupils on an ongoing basis,” said a statement from the Healthy Kidz company.
“As part of this Digital Programme, our team have built an expansive content portal, which contains resources and lesson
ideas covering our key strands in School PE, NET (Nutrition, Eyes & Teeth) and Emotional Wellbeing.
“Our programme is comprehensive, effective, sustainable, and fun and aims to create a positive and proactive pathway of activity for every child in school and at home.
“Every child’s health matters and Healthy Kidz gives every child and opportunity to realise their best mstate of well-being in a fun and fully inclusive programme.
“Our Healthy Kidz App will allow children to continue their healthy lifestyle journey outside of the classroom in a fun and interactive way.”
