Our latest Football Team of the Week is here.
As is always the case, particularly with so many teams playing at the moment, there are a number of players who can consider themselves unlucky to miss out.
None more so than Rathdowney’s Junior ‘C’ hero Tim Barry – who made headlines earlier in the week for his display at 72-years-of age. But the fact he didn’t take the kick outs just swung it away from him.
Barry Howlin, Damien McCaul, Brian Byrne, Eamonn Delaney, Stuart Mulpeter, Jason Moore, Stephen McDonald, Emmet Malone, Fergal Murphy, James Baldwin, Michael O’Connell, Evan O’Carroll, Ciaran Burke, James Finn, Aidan Keenaghan, David Conway, Donie Kingston, Enda O’Rourke, Oisin Byrne Adam Deering, Eoin Lowry and Danny Luttrell are all very unfortunate not to make the selection.
A total of 14 clubs are represented with Emo the only club to have two.
Check out our selection below:
1 – Rob Foran (Ballyfin)
Ballyfin went through to the Laois senior football quarter finals following a fine win over Ballyroan-Abbey.
Keeper Rob Foran was in top form. His kick-outs were pinpoint and he saved Diarmuid Whelan’s penalty only to be desperately unlucky for the rebound to fall back at the forward’s feet.
2 – Aaron McEvoy (Ballyroan-Abbey)
Defenders scoring points was a theme of the weekend and this corner back contributed two lovely efforts off his left foot.
Defended really well throughout too.
3 – James Kelly (St Joseph’s)
And just like McEvoy above, James Kelly also scored for St Joseph’s too.
He marshaled Tom Shiel really well, even if he did get very lucky not to concede a penalty before half time, but he did kick a crucial free in injury time to help his side win.
4 – Mark Timmons (Graiguecullen)
Still one of the best defenders in the county as age shows no signs of slowing him down.
Positioning and reading of the game was top class and he drove his team on in the second half as they weathered the storm from The Heath.
5 – Darragh Carolan (Stradbally)
Stradbally injuries to Jody Dillon and Eoin Buggie led to a reshuffle for Greg Ramsbottom’s men and this young man ended up at wing back.
Traditionally a forward, Carolan showed his versatility and came out with countless amounts of ball over the hour – kicking a great point after a lung-busting run too.
6 – Padraig Kirwan (Emo)
Padraig Kirwan is laying down an earlier marker for team of the year with two excellent displays in his first two matches.
His running from the half back line was a feature for Emo and he scored 1-1. While was unlucky not to have a second goal.
7 – Shane Bolger (Killeshin)
Bolger missed the first round defeat to Emo as he was in the UK but his return certainly helped Killeshin look more like their old self again.
He scored a point and had a right ding-dong battle with Niall Donoher and the Courtwood man was eventually sent off for two fouls on his opposite number.
8 – Cormac Murphy (Crettyard)
After playing most of his adult career as a forward, Cormac Murphy looks a new player after moving out to midfield.
The Crettyard man netted a hat-trick from that position and he has been Crettyard’s main playmaker.
9 – Paul Kingston (Arles-Killeen)
Paul Kingston was electric as Arles-Killeen downed neighbours Arles-Kilcruise to reach Round 3 of the championship.
He fired over five points and ran at the Kilcruise defence at pace at will to create opportunities for others.
10 – Matthew Finlay (O’Dempsey’s)
Matthew Finlay gave O’Dempsey’s the perfect start against Emo as he had the ball in the net in the opening minute.
He went on to score freely after that but Emo hit their purple patch at the right time.
11 – Jack Owens (Emo)
Jack Owens was the match winner for Emo last week as he kicked the final few points of the game to see them past O’Dempsey’s.
He also played a crucial role in the second goal of the game which was palmed to the net by Paddy Hosey.
12 – Niall Corbet (Clonaslee)
Clonaslee were in a right dog fight with The Rock at the weekend and in the end, it was the Laois goalkeeper that dug them out.
He scored 1-6 to their 1-7 as Clonaslee won by two points to seal a semi final place.
13 – Jake Foster (Portarlington)
Affectionately known as ‘Chalkey’, Jake Foster took on the mantle for Portarlington against Portlaoise in the absence of Ronan Coffey and Colm Murphy.
He ran them ragged in the first half and scored three great points before putting the game to bed with the final kick as he scored a late goal.
14 – Niall Mullen (Mountmellick)
Mountmellick huffed and puffed against Annanough but they finally got going in the last quarter to see off the Vicarstown men.
Niall Mullen was consistent throughout and he finished with 1-8 in the end – 1-5 from play.
15 – Gary Walsh (Ballylinan)
The Ballylinan sharpshooter landed 0-8 on a tricky night for football, while it also took to top class saves from Donal Lalor to deny him a goal.
Not at his best here but still the best forward on the field by some distance.
