St Brigid’s and Timahoe play out thrilling draw to keep semi final hopes alive

St Brigid’s 0-13 Timahoe 2-7
Laois Ladies SFC Round 4

It was honours even in Ballylinan this evening as St Brigid’s and Timahoe played out a very entertaining affair which had a thrilling finish.

Both sides will feel they could have won the game but the draw means that they are each still in with a chance of reaching the semi finals with one game to go.

St Paul’s have withdrawn from the competition which means that four of the remaining five teams will contest the knock-out phase.

Portlaoise are already there with three wins in the bag while Sarsfields will join them if they defeat St Conleth’s tomorrow night.

St Conleth’s are third following their win over St Brigid’s with the latter and Timahoe both sitting fourth in the table following tonight’s draw.

The last round of fixtures, which takes place on Sunday, sees St Brigid’s face Portlaoise and Timahoe take on St Conleth’s – so it really is all to play for.

St Brigid’s began the game with a strong wind in their back and they took advantage of this in the opening minutes of the half.

They scored four points in a row via Jessica Byrne, Lisa Walsh and a brace from Aisling Lacey. However, Timahoe scored a fantastic goal through Orla Hennessy.

Sarah Touhy won a kick out and played the ball swiftly up the field. It eventually found Maggie Murphy and she laid it off to Hennessy who blasted the ball home.

St Brigid’s and Timahoe continued to exchange points until the water break with braces from Mo Nerney and Lacey.

However, St Brigid’s began to dominate after the interval. They worked the ball up the field before Anna Moore popped the ball to Siobhan Kaye and she went for goal from a tight angle. Timahoe keeper Lisa Daly made herself big and made a great save to keep a point between the sides.

As we entered the latter stages of the half, referee Brendan Hickey brandished two yellow cards in quick succession which altered the flow of the game.

Firstly, Anna Moore received a yellow card for a high tackle on Alice Dunne while Roisin Larkin also saw the line for Timahoe. These yellow cards made the start of the second half very open which catered for many scores. At half time, St Brigid’s led by 0-8 to 1-3.

Substitute Roisin Fleming and Lacey swapped points to maintain the two point gap on the resumption of play.

But Timahoe soon got their second goal of the game through Mo Nerney. Maggie Murphy won the ball on the edge of the box and popped it off to Mo Nerney and she blasted the ball into the corner of the net to give Timahoe the lead for the first time.

St Brigid’s began to gain more possession as Anna Moore returned the field at the end of her time in the bin. This resulted in points from Kaye, Amy Pots and Moore to help St Brigid’s regain the lead and go two clear.

As the clock began to tick down the game became very frantic. Orla Hennessy became very influential during this period as her direct running won multiple frees for Timahoe which were converted by Mo Nerney.

Hennessy then scored the final point of the half which levelled the game as we approached injury time. Both teams had chances to win it in the dying stages of the game.

Timahoe had the best chance to win game as Hennessy won the kick-out and passed the ball to Maggie Murphy who was one-on-one with keeper Aisling Byrne. Murphy’s effort on goal was terrifically saved by Byrne which helped keep her side’s hopes alive for a place in the semi final.

While St Brigid’s also had chances to win it but a late Aisling Lacey free just dropped short and the spoils were shared.
