Laois Shopping Centre SHC Group A R3 Castletown v Clough-Ballacolla
MW Hire O’Moore Park at 3.30pm
The weekend’s hurling action gets underway with the meeting of Clough-Ballacolla and Castletown.
No matter what Castletown do, they will be in the relegation final against either Ballinakill or Camross in two weeks time.
If Clough-Ballacolla avoid defeat, they will be through to the semi finals. They could top the group if Rathdowney-Errill fail to beat Abbeyleix or if they defeat Castletown by 22 points more than Rathdowney-Errill beat Abbeyleix.
Verdict – Clough-Ballacolla
Laois Shopping Centre SHC Group B R3 Rosenallis v Borris-Kilcotton
MW Hire O’Moore Park at 5.30pm
More of the same here as in all likelihood, both of these teams will be through to the semi finals no matter what happens this week.
Bottis-Kilcotton are already there after wins over Camross and Ballinakill while avoiding defeat would be enough for them to seal top spot here.
Rosenallis’ shock win over Camross means that even a defeat here would see them qualify.
If they do lose, they won’t be mathematically guaranteed until we get the outcome of the Ballinakill v Camross game tomorrow.
Ballinakill would have to win that – and likely by 20 odd points to overtake Rosenallis and that does not seem remotely likely.
Borris-Kilcotton to win this one regardless.
Verdict – Borris-Kilcotton
Laois Shopping Centre PIHC R3 Mountrath v The Harps
Colt at 5.30pm
The absolute definition of a dead rubber here.
Mountrath will be in a relegation playoff while The Harps will be in the semi finals regardless of the result.
Even if they lose, The Harps top the group on head-to-head but it will not come to that.
Verdict – The Harps
Laois Shopping Centre PIHC R3 Camross v Clonaslee
Rathleague at 5.30pm
While one game in this group is meaningless, this one certainly isn’t with plenty at stake for both teams.
Both hammered Mountrath and both were beaten by The Harps – albeit Clonaslee lost by a lot more than Camross did.
Camross have lost Darragh Duggan and Ori Phelan off this team from their previous two games as they hurled senior two weeks ago.
Nevertheless, Camross might have enough in reserve to edge this one.
Verdict – Camross
Laois Shopping Centre IHC R3 Trumera v Clonad
Shanahoe at 5.30pm
In a weekend of dead rubbers and meaningless games, this game is effectively a quarter final.
Whoever wins it is through to the semi finals alongside Rathdowney-Errill while a draw would also see Trumera through on points difference.
These sides played out two thrilling semi finals back in 2017 with Trumera eventually prevailing after a replay.
They defeated Ballypickas more comfortably than Clonad did and that would make them favourites here.
Verdict – Trumera
Laois Shopping Centre IHC R3 Rathdowney-Errill v Ballypickas
Timahoe at 5.30pm
Unfortunately this one is another dead rubber.
Rathdowney-Errill are getting ready for the semi finals while Ballypickas are in the relegation final regardless of the result.
Rathdowney-Errill even top the group if they lose but they won’t.
Verdict – Rathdowney-Errill
Laois Ladies SFC Playoff Timahoe v St Brigid’s
Courtwood at 6pm
But after defeats to Portlaoise, Sarsfields and St Conleth’s – Timahoe and St Brigid’s have finished deadlocked in fourth place in the group as the pair drew with each other when they met two weeks ago.
As St Brigid’s gave a walkover to Sarsfields and St Paul’s withdrew, it was determined that points difference could not be used to split the teams.
And so, they will meet in a playoff in Courtwood tonight where the winner will go through to meet Portlaoise in the last four.
The sides drew in dramatic fashion a few weeks ago but Timahoe midfielder Sarah Larkin missed that game through injury and with her now back to full fitness – that could be the difference.
