Arles-Killeen 1-10 The Heath 0-16
Laois SFC Round 3
The Heath have become the fifth team to reach the last eight of the Laois senior football championship following a three point win over Arles-Killeen tonight.
They led pretty much from pillar to post and dealt with injury blows to Ciaran Booth and Mark Dowling at crucial times to prevail.
Probably the most impressive aspect of their win was the fact that they had nine different scorers over the course of the hour.
Arles-Killeen battled well, but in the end it was the superior pace of The Heath that told as they cut Killeen open at will with Dylan Kavanagh and Neil Keane crucial to this.
The first quarter of this one was even enough as The Heath, playing with the breeze, struggled to get away from Killeen.
Donie and Paul Kingston both pointed for Killeen in the opening ten minutes while Conor Booth and Robbie Ging responded for The Heath.
They almost had a goal shortly after that when Dylan Kavanagh pounced on a stray kick-out but his effort to lob Mick Leigh just went over the bar.
Killeen responded through Jason Enright but they lost Enda O’Rourke and Ian Scully to injury after that and that seemed to hamper them.
The Heath finished the half strongly with Booth, Kavanagh, James Phelan and Daithi Carroll all registering efforts to leave them 0-8 to 0-3 ahead at half time.
Killeen turned with the wind and cut the gap to three in the first minute of the second half with points from Donie Kingston and Jason Enright.
But Killeen moved Kingston in to full forward after that and his influence on the game reduced as he was well marshalled by Denis Booth.
Conor Booth settled The Heath as he converted after brilliantly winning a mark and converting it.
Jason Enright and Robbie Ging swapped efforts before the latter scored again to leave The Heath 0-11 to 0-6 up after 41 minutes.
Sub Leon Holland then converted a free and The Heath led 0-12 to 0-6 at the second water break.
Killeen needed something to spark them into life and they got it after 50 minutes when Conor Keightley floated a ball into Donie Kingston who beat his man and rattled the net.
Points from Jason Enright and Donie Brennan made it a one point game but the gap was back to three with four minutes to play thanks to Alan Whelan and Chris Bergin – 0-14 to 1-8.
Killeen were then reduced to 14 men when Shane Julain was shown a straight red for an off the ball incident involving Jimmy Nerney that was spotted by linesman Eric Ward.
Paul Kingston and Neil Keane then traded efforts to leave three in it as we entered injury time.
Jason Enright cut the deficit to two but it was goals Killeen needed and they didn’t come as Jimmy Nerney made the game safe with the final kick.
