Laois soccer ladies team on the lookout for new faces

With the new season just around the corner, Mountmellick United’s ever-improving Senior Ladies soccer team are looking for new players from around the county to get involved.

After playing in the Kildare league for a number of years, United decided to move away from the summer format last season and join the CCFL which is played from September to April.

Mountmellick native Tom Moss joined the management team with John Hibbitts and Padraic Goodwin in the early stages of last previous season and is now plotting for further improvement as he goes it alone for the new season.

Tom said: “We’ve a core group of really committed and experienced players who form the spine of an excellent team, players like Amy Coss, Linda and Susan Lee, Jamie Lalor, Chris O’Riordan and Lisa Guinane have seen it all before and are still relentless trainers at every session twice a week.

“Since the lockdown we’ve added the likes of Niamh Conroy from Emo, Kiahara Dempsey from town here and Ali Parkinson, sister of long-serving goalkeeper Jenny, from Mounrath, so we have lots of very talented young players to go with that experience provided by our longer-serving players.”

Being involved in the winter league means that Mountmellick Utd have started to attract a lot of GAA players who would have struggled to commit to a summer season.

Established GAA players like Amy Grehan, Laura Peake and Laois footballer Meaghan Dunne are just some of the key members of the United panel who can now enjoy year-round sports with winter training focusing on both physical and technical aspects of the game.

With the club investing close to €15,000 during the lockdown on upgrading their clubhouse and three pitches, Mountmellick Utd enjoys some of the best facilities in the league and takes huge pride in the ongoing development of the only Ladies team in the CCFL from Laois.

Registration is now open for any player from the region who would like to get involved, and you can contact coach Tom Moss on 089 7004707 if interested.
