Killeshin back on track after impressive win over Courtwood

Killeshin 2-15 Courtwood 2-11
Laois Shopping Centre SFC Round 2

Last year’s beaten finalists Killeshin are back on track in the Laois SFC as they put in an impressive first-half performance to beat Courtwood.

They endured a nervous final ten minutes when Courtwood struck for two goals but Killeshin had enough in the bank to hold on.

With manager Karol O’Dwyer allowed to attend again after the lockdown was lifted in Kildare and Shane Bolger back in the starting team, they hit 1-5 in a purple patch midway through the opening half to open a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game.

Getting on top in midfield, their forward movement caused problems for Courtwood and a well-taken goal from Evan Lowry helped them to a 1-5 to 0-3 lead at the water break.

Courtwood relied too heavily on Danny Luttrell frees and with Ross Bolger on form, David Aston kicking a couple of frees and Luke Attride, Shane Bolger, Adam Deering and Michael Doran on target they led 1-8 to 0-6 at the break.

Killeshin got the first three points of the second half from the two Lowrys and Michael Doran and while Danny Luttrell got two more frees, Killeshin were 1-11 to 0-8 up the second water break.

Courtwood could look back at a couple of missed goal chances – Alan Kinsella in the first half and Paul O’Flynn in the second – but did throw themselves a lifeline with six minutes remaining when Kinsella crashed home a brilliant effort.

Eoin Lowry hit back for Killeshin but in a welter of excitement, Paddy Wilson got a second goal for Courtwood and a Luttrell free and one from Luke Doyle had the gap back to two.

But Killeshin held on in a nervous final few moments and Cathal Brennan and Arnie Mahon pointed to make sure of the win late on.

Killeshin now go forward to Round 3 while Courtwood are out and go into the relegation playoffs.
