Local TD sponsors new footballs for two Laois GAA clubs
Portarlington based TD for Kildare South, Cathal Berry has declared that he is looking forward to two teams from his patch contesting the Laois SFC Final.
Deputy Berry was speaking after a tour of three local clubs, where he presented O’Neill match balls to Portarlington, Gracefield and O’Dempseys GAA clubs.
He said: “Having grown up in a mad GAA house on the Waterfor- Cork border I know all about local rivalries.
“It is the heartbeat of the GAA and wouldn’t it be great to see Portarlington and O’Dempsey’s contesting the county final or Portarlington and Emo.
“After years of dominance by Portlaoise it was great to see a young Portarlington team beat them in their last game.
“Huge congratulations are due to the manager Martin Murphy and his backroom team. David Murphy, Chairman of the Portarlington Club, thanked Cathal Berry for his generous donation of footballs to the club.”
Adrian Murphy, a selector with the Gracefield senior team, who play Ballycumber in the upcoming Senior B semi final of the Offaly championship, thanked Deputy Berry on behalf of Gracefield GAA Club.
Jude McCormack the chairman of O’Dempsey’s GAA club also extended thanks to the local TD on behalf of his club.
Big weekend of Kildare championship action with O’Loughlin hoping to progress with Sarsfields
The Kildare football championship is progressing at a good pace and despite being locked down for over three weeks and four weekends, the senior football quarter-finals take place this weekend.
Having played games early midweek for the second round of group games less than two weeks ago, the final round of group games was last weekend and the quarter-finals are being played as two double headers on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. The plan is to play the semi-finals next weekend and the final the weekend after on October 4, two weeks before Kildare resume their Allianz Football League campaign.
Billy O’Loughlin’s Sarsfields are hot favourites to take another step towards the defence of their title when they meet Raheens on Saturday while the first game on Saturday is an interesting clash between Ronan Sweeney’s Moorefield and Luke Dempsey’s Johnstownbridge.
Celbridge and Clane meet in the first game on Sunday while Athy and Round Towers, who are managed by Glenn Ryan, meet in the second game.
Dempsey and McNulty seek to reach Offaly senior final
There’s a chance that there could be two Laois managers in the Offaly senior football final.
The semi-finals take place this weekend where Sean Dempsey is in charge of reigning champions Ferbane. They take on Tullamore tomorrow afternoon.
The other semi-final sees Malachy McNulty’s Rhode team meet Edenderry this evening.
The second-tier Senior ‘B’ semi-finals take place this weekend also where Gracefield are looking to bounce back to senior straight away. They take on Ballycumber in one semi-final on Sunday while Tubber play Durrow in the other semi-final on Saturday.
