Previewing all of Wednesday night’s Laois GAA action

The Laois GAA club scene continues tonight with four more adult championship football games across the county – all of them to be played behind closed doors and without supporters once again.

As was the case last night, all the games in the senior grade must be played out to a conclusion tonight – so penalties will be needed in the event of the teams still being level after extra time.

The Ladies football championship is also set to continue while there are also a handful of junior games.

Here, we look ahead to what to expect.

Laois Shopping Centre SFC R1 Arles-Killeen v Graiguecullen
In MW Hire O’Moore Park at 6.45pm

The players were almost ready to go when this game was called off at the last minute almost three weeks ago due to newly imposed government restrictions.

Arles-Killeen and Graiguecullen have both contested finals and semi finals in the last decade but the former have dropped off in recent years.

An ageing side with a heavy reliance on the two Kingston brothers, Killeen were defeated in Round 3 last year by Ballyfin.

Graiguecullen reached a quarter final last year where they went down to Portarlington – but only after a replay.

With Danny O’Reilly back to full fitness and Trevor Collins opting to remain in the country, Graiguecullen can expect to get off to a winning start here.

VERDICT – Graiguecullen

Laois Shopping Centre SFC R1 – The Heath v Arles-Kilcruise
In Stradbally at 7.30pm

The final of the Round 1 games sees The Heath and Arles-Kilcruise clash in Stradbally.

Two teams that have flirted with relegation in recent season, this one will be massive for whoever wins it and very damaging for the loser.

The Heath have older heads like Chris Bergin, Denis Booth and Daithi Carroll still knocking around while the likes of PJ Daly, Dylan Kavanagh, Conor Booth, Liam Kinsella and Neil Keane are exciting young players.

Arles-Kilcruise bring all their experience and will be heavily relient as always on Ross Munnelly and David Conway for scores.

This one should be close but perhaps Kilcruise’s dogged nature could see them through.

Verdict: Arles-Kilcruise

Laois Shopping Centre JFC R1 – Portarlington v Kilcavan
In Portarlington at 7.30pm

Round 1 of the Junior football championship concludes tonight with Kilcavan making the trip to Portarlington.

Kilcavan have been down at this level for the last few years and have failed to reach the final since they did so in 2017.

Portarlington are always competitive at this level and so too are the third team in the group – The Heath.

So a win tonight is imperative for Kilcavan and they might just get it.

Verdict – Kilcavan
