Abbeyleix Athletic U-19s claim CCFL Division 1 title

Abbeyleix AFC’s U-19 squad secured an impressive CCFL Division 1 title recently following a convincing win over a Clara side who themselves were within touching distance of securing league honours.

This Abbeyleix team have been playing together for a number of years under the excellent management of Adrian Freeman, a selection of the panel have already taken the step up to the senior ranks and are ensuring both teams are in the hunt for silverware.

From the outset Abbeyleix were on the front foot and man of the match Colin Rowan was causing a lot of danger on the left wing, whipping the ball into the area at every opportunity, it was from this source Abbeyleix scored their first goal, a low ball across the edge of the area to the excellent Adam Broady who scored with a neat finish regardless of the slight deflection on the way through.

Despite the dominance Abbeyleix had to be on their toes at the back as a rare attack forward for Clara saw them break through the middle however Rory Nevin comfortably saved in the Abbeyleix goal.

From here on in the defence tightened up and there were good displays from senior players Josh Tormey and Lee Maher who had able assistance from Cody Lacumber.

Half time came and although Abbeyleix were playing well and winning there was still a lot more in this team and manager Freeman got them geared up to step it up a level in the second half.

They started well and the hard working Ben Freeman and the ever industrious Broady in the middle of the park ensured there was plenty of ball moving forward where Jamie Stratford, Robert Corkish and Darren Robinson were willing and able to test the keeper on a number of occasions, all putting in good performances.

The second goal eventually came from a free kick from distance. Colin Rowan stepping up to strike a trade mark ball to the top corner with the Clara keeper having no hope of keeping it out when struck so well.

At this stage Abbeyleix were on the up and sensed the cup was within their grasp and there were some excellent passages of play, it was from here Abbeyleix had their third, Colin Rowan again, racing in to finish a low cross from Darren Robinson.

The bench was emptied and there were good performances from Joel Amoakoh, Finn Roll and Matthew Gibney who all played their part when introduced and throughout the season.

The final goal was worth the wait, Aaron O’Dea, another player to make an impressive step up to the senior ranks went on a persistent run and forced his way past a couple of defenders to dispatch a brilliant effort to the net from just on the edge of the area.

The final whistle came shortly after and it was brilliant to see Abbeyleix club man Michael Gorman representing the CCFL on hand to present the winning captain Broady with the league Cup.

A great season despite the Covid break. This side also have a cup final to look forward to as they attempt a double. With the majority underage again next year the future certainly looks bright.

Abbeyleix AFC would like again to extend thanks and appreciation to Mick Moran who has the pitch and facilities in top condition and also to Sean Morgan who continues to photograph our home games with great expertise.
