Tuohy back in action as AFL resumes Down Under

With Australia escaping the worst of the Coronavirus pandemic, the country has been re-opening in recent weeks with sports fixtures taking place over the weekend for the first time since March.

Australia have had only had just over 100 deaths from the disease and about 7,500 cases and their Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy said last week that they have “effectively achieved elimination at this time in many parts of the country”.

For Portlaoise man Zach Tuohy and his club Geelong, it meant their season was able to get back underway.

They had a huge win over Melbourne-based Hawthorn at the weekend when Tuohy was joined in the Geelong team by former Kerry underage star Mark O’Connor.

The game was played behind closed doors, though crowds of up to 10,000 are expected to be allowed attend matches from July onwards.

It was only Geelong’s second game of the season after the season was suspended after their opening round back in March.

Tuohy is in the final year of a four-year contract though will be hoping for an extension for 2021.

The Australian season this year has been shortened somewhat because of the lockdown measures and the Grand Final will be played in October, slightly later than usual.

Tuohy’s Geelong side, one of the outright pre-season favourites, play his old side Carlton this weekend.
