Laois Today: Willie Dunphy recalls ‘greatest memory’ when Laois defeated Dublin in Portlaoise

Laois senior hurler Willie Dunphy says that his greatest ever memory in a Laois jersey was when the O’Moore’s defeated Dublin last July.

The Clough-Ballacolla man was speaking on the latest LaoisToday Talking Sport Podcast where he was joined by teammate James Keyes.

Looking back on that game last year, Dunphy says the 1-22 to 0-23 win and the feeling that it gave him is indescribable.

He said: “By far, it has to be (one of my best days). It is hard to describe it – it is just the greatest memory you could every have.

“I do listen to you Podcast and to hear Jack Nolan’s voice describing the final minutes – there would actually be tears coming out of your eyes and you would have goosebumps.

“Just to have that memory is never, ever going to be forgotten.

“When the final whistle went against Dublin, you had Laois people running and jumping everywhere. One of the best memories I’ll ever have in a Laois jersey.”

Willie Dunphy hit four points in the win and was subsequently named man of the match.

But the forward says he didn’t actually realise he had played that well until after the game.

He said: “You wouldn’t really be thinking about how you are playing at the time – it was only after the match when people were telling you how well you had done that it really sank in.

“I think there was heroic performances all over the pitch and the points just fell right for me on the day and I was very grateful for that.”
