Laois hurlers memorable victory over Dublin last year to feature on Sunday Game this weekend

In a time when we are all starved of GAA action – this is a real treat for Laois GAA fans.

Last weekend, the Sunday Game resumed on what should’ve been the first weekend of inter-county championship action.

The coronavirus has put an end to all of that for now and so the team at RTE are looking back at some old game.

And this weekend, RTE reporter Pauric Lodge has confirmed that they will show the Laois hurler’s victory over Dublin in the All-Ireland hurling championship from last year.

Lodge tweeted: “This week’s Sunday Game will include highlights and reflections on Laois hurlers championship win over Dublin last summer, which saw Laois reach their first All-Ireland quarter-final since 1979.”

Laois recorded a 1-22 to 0-23 win on that glorious July Sunday – in what was Laois’s biggest hurling championship win since the 1985 Leinster semi-final triumph over Dublin.

It also put Laois through to the All Ireland quarter-final for the first time since 1979.

And it led to wild celebrations in O’Moore Park as Lovely Laois belted out from the speakers as Eddie Brennan’s 13/2 outsiders stunned the visitors.

This was, after all, a Dublin team that had dumped Galway out of the Leinster and All Ireland series three weeks earlier and had been resting up for the last couple of weeks.

In the early days of the week of this game Laois were celebrating their Joe McDonagh Cup final.

This group of Laois hurlers had rarely experienced big home days like this.

Championship hurling at the height of the summer: a packed stand in O’Moore Park, a decent scattering on the terraces and a good buzz on the back of that Joe McDonagh Cup success in Croke Park seven days earlier.

The game wasn’t shown live on TV at the time as RTE were committed to showing the Irish Open from Lahinch and the Women’s World Cup soccer final in France.

But you can relive all of the action on Sunday night on RTE 2 at 9.30pm.
