High praise for a Carlow footballer from a Laois hurler

Carlow football and Laois hurling are not two things that you would expect to come together – but that is exactly what happened on the latest edition of the LaoisToday Talking Sport Podcast.

Colt-Shanahoe’s James Keyes was joined by his inter-county colleague Clough-Ballacolla’s Willie Dunphy to chat all things GAA.

At the end of the chat, the lads were asked to name the best coach that each of them have trained under.

Willie Dunphy went for two-time All-Ireland winner Kevin Martin as the Offaly native trained Clough-Ballacolla to club championship glory in 2015.

However, Keyes went more left field as he returned to his schooldays and picked out a current Carlow footballer.

Paul Broderick, himself nominated for an All-Star in 2018, coached James at football in Heywood and Keyes was glowing in his praise of him.

He said: “I’ve been lucky enough to have some very good trainers across a number of different sports over the years.

“But one that I really enjoyed was actually when we were in school in Heywood.

“Paul Broderick, he coached us for football and I just thought he was an absolutely brilliant trainer. It was football as well which I suppose is weird enough for me to say.

“But he is an absolutely excellent trainer and his drills were just unbelievable. He is a really in-depth thinker of the game and I loved it.

“I had a right few good trainers in hurling too but in terms of enjoyment, which I think is the main reason anybody does something, I really enjoyed it.

“I loved going training under Paul Broderick.”
