Five Laois hurlers saw action as IT Carlow reached a second Fitzgibbon Cup final in four years thanks to a 5-14 to 0-15 win over Mary I from Limerick in the semi-final in DCU this afternoon.
Captain Enda Rowland (Abbeyleix), who pointed two frees, Sean Downey (Ballinakill) and Podge Delaney (The Harps) all started while Stephen Bergin (Clough-Ballacolla) scored a goal after coming on as a sub early in the second half and Eoin Gaughan (Camross) hit a point after being introduced.
Shane Phelan from Castletown is also part of the panel.
Kilkenny legend DJ Carey is the manager and the hurlers progress comes just a couple of weeks after Pat Critchley and Pat Roe guided the college’s football team to a first ever Fitzgibbon Cup final.
Among IT Carlow’s top performers were Wexford’s Cathal Dunbar, Kilkenny’s Liam Blanchfield and Carlow’s Chris Nolan.
The Limerick side led 0-11 to 1-7 at the break but Bergin struck for a crucial goal just three minutes after coming on and Dunbar got two to help them into Wednesday’s final.
Champions UCC will be their opponents after they recorded a thrilling 0-18 to 0-17 win over hosts DCU in the second semi-final.
Wednesday’s final will ensure a busy week for any player who is also playing senior intercounty hurling as next weekend sees Round 3 of the National League.
After losses to Dublin and Wexford in their first two outings, Laois make the trip to Ennis next Sunday to take on Brian Lohan’s Clare side.
