Laois 3-6 Longford 2-6
Lidl Ladies Football League Division 3
The Laois ladies footballers claimed their first win of their Division 3 league campaign in Heywood this afternoon as they got the better of Longford in their re-fixed clash.
This game was originally due to be played in MW Hire O’Moore Park last week as part of a double header with the men’s game with Cavan.
But it was postponed due to Storm Ciara and rescheduled for today for Portarlington. This weekend’s storm then ensured a venue switch to Heywood’s 3G pitch but in tough conditions, Laois got off to a dream start.
They raced into a 1-3 to no score lead early on with a goal from Kate Whelan and points from Mo Nerney and Fiona Dooley.
But Longford were undeterred and came roaring back and went into a 1-4 to 1-3 lead before Kate Whelan levelled things up on the stroke of half time with a free.
The wind was a huge factor in the second half but two goals from the always-lively Erone Fitzpatrick were vital in getting Laois over the line.
The win moves Laois onto three points on the table following an earlier draw against Wicklow and a heavy defeat away to Roscommon.
Laois are away to Kildare next Sunday before facing home games against Fermanagh on March 8, Down on March 22 and the finishing up away to Sligo on March 29.
