It was a very busy weekend on the local soccer front with teams involved in the CCFl, Carlow and Kilkenny leagues.

Paddy Cotter Cup 2nd Round
Tullamore Town 1 Stradbally Town 3
Stradbally Town travelled to Leah Victoria Park on Saturday night for their Cotter Cup last 16 game against Tullamore Town.
Starting brightly Stradbally were ahead within five minutes when Scott Osborne’s excellently struck free kick swept across the box and evaded everyone there to slide into the corner of the net.
Stradbally continued to dominate their Senior Division opponents all over the pitch and were rewarded with a second goal. A good attack was broken down by the Tullamore defence but strangely one of the Tullamore midfielder’s played a pass directly back to Benny Lawlor who was standing alone in the box.
Lawlor unselfishly squared to Jody Dillon who tapped into an empty net to double Stradbally’s lead.
This seemed to spark Tullamore to life and they closed out the first half in the ascendancy. Just before halftime they were rewarded with a goal after some sloppy play from Stradbally around the midfield area was punished. 2-1 at halftime and all still to play for.
The second half was an evenly balanced affair and at times scrappy but Stradbally were always comfortable. The tie was finally put to bed with 15 min left to play, Lawlor this time being rewarded with a tap in after some great work from Dillon in the box.
Stradbally now go into the draw for the quarter finals of the Cotter Cup and look forward to some more big ties in the competition.
Next week Stradbally travel to another Senior Division side in Birr Town, for a last 32 tie in the CCFL Combined Counties Cup, the competition in which they were defeated in the final of last year after extra-time against Monksland United.

Paddy Cotter Cup 2nd Round
Mountmellick United 2 Gentex 1
Mountmellick United progressed to the quarter finals of the Paddy Cotter Cup following a 2-1 win over Gentex this morning.
The Laois side, who appointed Alan George as their new manager during the week, were full value for their win.
George previously managed the side in 2013 to a league and cup double and will be hoping for more success this time.
Mountmellick got off to a dreadful start as Athlone side Gentex took the lead with just five minutes on the clock.
The game remained that way until ten minutes from half time when former Laois footballer Darren Strong equalised with a bullet header from a corner.
The second half was a gritty affair with neither side willing to give much away but the game was settled in the 85th minute.
Sub Curtis Lee switched the play to Keith Ryan who pulled the ball back to Mark Grennan for the winner.

Rosenallis 0 Derry Rovers 3
The result doesn’t reflect the game. Rosenallis didn’t take the chances they created. Derry Rovers did.
The game started frantic, with chances for both sides. Derry Rovers then had a great chance to take the lead but a last ditch goal line clearance kept Rosenallis in the game.
The first goal came from a break away after a Rosenallis corner was cleared. The Derry Rovers number 10 found himself alone in the box for a simple finish.
Rosenallis grew into game and had the better chances for the rest of the half. A great cross from Shane Farrell was missed at the back post by inches by Charlie Friel.
The second half continued the same with Rosenallis creating more chances. Niall Doolan was the focal point for all attacks and his free kick half way through the first half had to be parried wise to keep Derry Rovers ahead.
Unfortunately Rosenallis could not make the chances count and with 5 minutes remaining, a quick throw and smart finish from the Derry Rovers number 7 put the game to bed.
There was still time for Derry Rovers to score another counter attack goal in the final minute with Rosenallis pushing for a goal back. Derry Rovers progress to the next round of the cup.

Combined Counties Shield 2nd Round
Stradbally Town B 2 Cloneygowan Celtic 1
Stradbally Town B pulled off something of a giant killing in The Lawn this morning as they knocked Portarlington side Cloneygowan Celtic out of the Combined Counties Shield.
Cloneygowan had won the league fixture before Christmas 8-2 but Stradbally Town have improved massively in recent weeks and this was their third straight win.
Playing against the breeze in the first half, Stradbally started well with Liam Clancy and Luke Kelly in particular causing problems with their pace down the wings.
We had to wait until the 25th minute for the game’s first goal – and what a strike it was. Some lovely play up the left wing involving John Clancy, Liam Clancy and Murtagh Condron saw Sean Devoy step over the ball and leave it for Richard Carolan who took one touch before firing it low into the bottom corner.
The strike was from all of 30 yards and was a finish that another right footed left back, Denis Irwin, would’ve been proud of.
Cloneygowan tried to get back into things before half time but with Eamonn Delaney and Noel Delaney rock solid at the back, they were reduced to speculative long range efforts which didn’t trouble keeper Sean Murphy.
But the Division 3A leaders were a different side in the second half as they struck the crossbar and then the post in quick succession.
Stradbally regained their composure and when Sean Devoy intercepted a pass deep in the Cloneygowan half he charged towards goal and showed great composure to dink the advancing keeper and make it 2-0.
Stradbally had other chances through Colm Clancy and Derek O’Gorman but they were caught with 12 minutes to play when a high ball found the Cloneygowan striker who looked offside but he finished well.
After that it was backs to the wall stuff but Stradbally stood firm and saw out what remained to advance to the last eight of the competition.
An incredible team performance but special mention to Luke Kelly, Richard Carolan and Murtagh Condron who were excellent.
