Clonaslee College fall just short in South Leinster Football Final

Clonalsee College’s bid for silverware ended with a four point loss to Kildare’s St Farnans in a bitterly cold LOETB Centre of Excellence last night.

The game burst into life from the throw in. St Farnan’s Eoin Bagnall broke through the centre to force a save from Clonalsee shotstopper, Robert Stephenson.

A few minutes later and Cathal Lee nearly open the scoring with a goal, but for a great off the line clearance from St Farnan’s.

After eight minutes it was Sean Dunne from St Farnan’s who opened his sides account after a long-range effort hit the post. This spurred on St Farnan’s who quickly added two more Eoin Bagnall frees.

Despite the best efforts of Clonalsee’s midfield, St Farnan’s were beginning to run riot. Bagnall added another to his tally with ten to go until the half.

Clonalsee were struggling to win their own kickouts, but Conor Cosgrove latched onto a breaking ball in midfield and this resulted in Robert Downey pointing from distance to register Clonalsee’s first point.

The hard running from deep from St Farnan’s was creating problems, however big hits from the Clonalsee defence kept them in it.

Sean Dunne pointed from a tricky angle to push St Farnan’s lead out to five as the halftime whistle blew – 0-6 to 0-1.

Clonalsee seemed to emerge a new team. They dominated kickout after kickout. Downey pointed from a free and kicked another soon after to install hope into his team.

Cosgrove, Murray and Flynn couldn’t fail to pick up a breaking ball now as Clonaslee pressed high up the field.

With 42 minutes gone St Farnan’s counter attacked with venom, resulting in Stevenson getting his fingertips to a shot destined for the top corner. It was a save like no other. This gave Clonaslee another boost.

Soon after Oisin Murray found a gap in the St Farnan’s defence. He rifled a shot high at the keeper but the St Farnan’s keeper somehow managed to get the softest touch and the ball smashed against the crossbar.

Soon after though, Cosgrove pulled off some soccer trickery to set up Downey once more. Clonaslee had brought it back to two down.

However this was as good as it would get for Clonaslee. Half-time substitute Jack O’Brien, chipped over two points from close range to extend St Farnan’s lead.

Cosgrove went close for Clonaslee but after beating several men, was penalised for charging. St Farnan’s continued to nick scores and approaching injury time led by six.

With time running out for Clonaslee, Josh Flynn rose highest to punch the ball into the back of the net to put three between the sides.

This meant a very nervy and tense finish to the game. A very physical and bruising final was deep into injury time when a point from Bagnall solidified a narrow win for St Farnan’s.
