Wins for Towerhill, Stradbally Town B and all the latest soccer results

It was a busy day on the local soccer front with games involving Laois teams taking part in three different leagues.

The Combined Counties, Kilkenny and Carlow soccer leagues all had full schedules today and below are some match reports along with all of the results:

Mullingar Town A 3-0 Stradbally Town A
CCFL Division 1 Cup Quarter Final

Stradbally Town travelled to Mullingar for their first round clash in the Division 1 cup which turned into a game of two penalties.

With conditions very tough under foot Mullingar got off to a flying start when Stradbally keeper Joe Walshe was adjudged to have brought down a Mullingar forward. 1-0 Mullingar town after 2 minutes.

Mullingar pushed hard for a second goal but Stradbally defended well and eventually got a grip of the game. After a few nice passages of play Benny Lawlor was brought down in the box and Stradbally had a penalty of their own. Unfortunately Jody Dillon’s spot kick struck the post and went wide.

Stradbally again started very strongly in the second half and pushed hard for an equaliser. Unfortunately in the last 5 minutes Stradbally were caught with a break away goal. 2-0 down Stradbally continued to press for a goal and with the last kick of the game were punished with a break away goal again.

Stradbally didn’t deserve to be on the end of that scoreline but realistically didn’t really create too many clear cut chances either.

Next up for Stradbally’s first team is a trip to Senior Division side Tullamore Town in the last 16 of the Cotter Cup next Saturday Night Feb 1st at 7pm.

TEAM: Joe Walshe, Colin Beale, Billy Murphy, Richie Ryan, Podge Fitzpatrick, Damien Murphy, Justin Lalor, Scott Osbourne, Jimmy Langton, Benny Lawlor and Jody Dillon. SUBS: Jack Langton for Fitzpatrick, Jake Byrne for Jimmy Langton and Tim Flood for Osbourne

Towerhill Rovers 3 Mountmellick United 1
CCFL Division 1 Cup Quarter Final

Towerhill got the better of Laois neighbours Mountmellick to advance to the next stage of the Division 1 Cup this afternoon.

This was very attacking from the start with Mountmellick having most of the possession in first 20 minutes. However, on the half hour mark, Towerhill went on the attack and won a corner which crossed in by Ricky Maher where Hayden Delaney got on the end of it to open the scoring.

Mountmellick tried to get back into the game with former Laois footballer Darren Strong having a shot saved by Towerhill keeper Richie Downey and the score remained 1-0 at half time.

The second half started at a blistering pace with Towerhill taking the ball up the left where Joey Delaney produced a low cross across the goal mouth which was finished by Emeka after 50 minutes.

The next 10 minutes was all Mountmellick but on the hour mark, Towerhill played the ball down right wing where Ricky Maher picked out Nathan Carpenter who finished first time with a sweet strike.

Towerhill were now 3-0 up but Mountmellick were piling on the pressure.

And on the 70th minute they took a blasting shot from outside the box which the TowerHill keeper saved well but pushed it onto the incoming striker who finish to the bottom corner to make it 3-1.

For the last 20 minutes it was mostly Mountmellick trying to pull goals back but the Towerhill defence stayed solid like they were all day to win.

TOWERHILL: Richie Downey, Shane Collins, Mark Brennan, Shane Brophy, James Furlong, Joey Delaney, Paul Sutton, Nathan Carpenter, Ricky Maher, Hayden Delaney, Emeka

Stradbally Town B 2 Maryborough 1
CCFL Division 3A

Stradbally Town’s second string continued their good form from before Christmas with a hard fought win over Maryborough in the Lawn this morning.

The sides drew 3-3 in Portlaoise earlier this season but Stradbally had led that game 3-1 and were determined to pick up all three points.

The game began in driving hailstones and Stradbally asserted their dominance earlier on with Luke Kelly and Liam Clancy creating openings with their pace.

The game’s opening goal came on the half hour mark when John Clancy found Ciarán O’Neill in the box and he was fouled for a penalty.

Up stepped Derek O’Gorman and he sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 1-0 and that is how it remained at half time.

Stradbally attempted to put the game to bed on the resumption but couldn’t manage to rattle the net.

Liam Clancy was desperately unlucky to see an effort cannon back off the crossbar following some great work from Richard Carolan and then moments later the post denied him from a similar position.

Derek O’Gorman and Murtagh Condron tested the Maryborough keeper but the goal didn’t come and instead the Portlaoise outfit scored on the counter to level the game after 70 minutes.

Stradbally Town were rocked but they went to the bench where Kilian Mcgannon, Mark Gannon and Adam Murphy all made big impacts.

But it was the same combination for the first goal that would come up with the winner seven minutes from the end.

Derek O’Gorman turned provider for Ciarán O’Neill this time and from the tightest of angles he squeezed a shot into the corner of the net to claim all three points.

Best for Stradbally Town were Eamonn Delaney, John Clancy and Derek O’Gorman.

Stradbally Town: Robbie Moore; Colm Clancy, Eamonn Delaney, Noel Delaney, Richard Carolan; Murtagh Condron, John Clancy, Ciaran O’Neill, Luke Kelly, Derek O’Gorman, Liam Clancy. Subs: Kilian Mcgannon, Adam Murphy, Mark Gannon
