Quirke positive ahead of Laois footballers league campaign despite multiple injuries

The Allianz National football League is kicking off this weekend and Laois will travel to Dr Hyde Park to take on Roscommon on Sunday at 2pm.

Manager, Mike Quirke, said the team have been struck with multiple injuries but players are working on their recoveries and looking forward to getting back.

Speaking about Timhoe’s Damien O’Connor, Quirke said: “Damien is going to be back. He has been out since we started. He’s going to be back this week.”

Portlaoise’s Gareth Dillon is not currently in with the squad as the Kerry man explained: “Gareth is not in with us now. He is working away with Tom, our S&C guy, so he is doing endurance stuff.

“He’s got a situation going on so he’s not in with us now, but hopefully during the league we should see him back.”

Also out to injury are Dicey Reilly, who is nursing a cruciate injury and Marty Scully who will be expecting to return in the next four to six weeks after suffering an ankle injury.

“When you’re in a county you feel you are the only one getting bad luck with injuries or fellas going away but every county is in the same boat.

“The League can be funny. At the end of January and outside there the place is frozen. You don’t know what sort of conditions you are going to find.

Anything can happen in these games and I believe we have enough quality footballers that if everything goes our way we’ll be more that competitive in every game, and after that you need a bit of luck,” Quirke explained. 

Despite the few knocks, the manager is positive about his squads upcoming league campaign.

“I think staying in the Division is going to a perfectly realistic prospect. It’s going to be very difficult as it is going to be for every team but I am confident we are going to get over the line,” he assured.
