New Colt/Shanahoe club passed by Laois GAA resulting in championship changes

The brand new Colt/Shanahoe GAA club was officially rubber-stamped by Laois GAA at their County Board meeting on Monday night.

Earlier this month, Colt and Shanahoe clubs held votes on a proposal to amalgamate fully for hurling.

The decision follows months of negotiations between the two clubs as well as separate meetings of the two individual clubs and support from Laois County Board.

The amalgamation is a full join up that will see the clubs come together for all grades from underage up to adult.

It came before the other GAA clubs in the county at Monday’s meeting and was unanimously passed.

Colt and Shanahoe previously played separately in the old Senior A competition that has now been renamed Premier Intermediate.

But their coming together leaves just seven teams in that championship now so Laois GAA has decided to expunge Clonaslee’s relegation.

They lost to Slieve Bloom in the relegation final last year but will now not drop to Junior A.

And the same applies in the Intermediate grade where Ballypickas, who were relegated by Clonad, will also get to stay up.

The imbalance is then addressed a Junior ‘A’ level where Colt/Shanahoe enter their second team with their third team playing at Junior ‘C’ level.

As reported earlier this month, the teams will preserve their existing clubs by entering Junior C football teams.

At juvenile level, Colt and Shanahoe have largely played their hurling with Raheen Parish Gaels (including Clonad, Ballypickas and Trumera).

Ballypickas have pulled away from this arrangement to join forces with Ballinakill at underage level.

At U-13, Clonad have their own team while Colt/Shanahoe are in with Trumera.

However, from U-14 up to U-20, the three clubs are together as Raheen Parish Gaels.
