Leinster final disappointment for brave St Leo’s girls

There was huge disappointment for St Leo’s of Carlow today as they were beaten by Longford school Mercy SS of Ballymahon in the Leinster ‘B’ ladies football final in Bord na Mona O’Connor Park in Tullamore.

With a huge Laois contingent and an all Laois management team of Martina Phelan, Natalie O’Carroll, Caoimhe Simms, Aisling Byrne, St Leo’s had impressed en route to the final.

But it was the Longford side’s ability to make and take their goal chances that proved the difference in a high-scoring contest.

Killeshin’s Ciara McDonald struck for two goals in the opening half Sara Doyle from St Brigid’s also firing home a brilliant individual effort.

Eibhe Lawlor from Old Leighlin in Carlow, Graiguecullen’s Jade Nolan, Doyle and Aine Lacey from St Brigid’s also added points.

But Ballymahon got a couple of early goals and at half time were 4-5 to 3-5 in front.

They would add two further goals in the second half and a harsh yellow card sin bin for Sara Doyle meant Leo’s finished with 14 players.

It was a disappointing end to a good campaign for the Leo’s girls – many of whom we’ll see representing Laois and their clubs over the coming months.
