Knockbeg College’s Leinster dreams are over for this year after they were beaten in heartbreaking circumstances yesterday afternoon.

Graiguecullen played host to a great game of football as the Knockbeg senior footballers took on Mullingar CBS in the last 16 of Leinster.

The Mullingar CBS U16s team claimed the All-Ireland U-16 title in 2018, defeating St.Brendan’s, Killarney and were favourites here.

Knockbeg got off to a flying start scoring 1-1 in the first five minutes, a Fionn Bergin point was followed up by a long range effort from Ian Shanahan which the keeper punched into the roof of his own net after attempting to punch it over the bar.

Fionn Bergin added his second and Colin Dunne kicked a point to leave it at 1-3 0-1 with the Mullingar point coming from a free.

The Mullingar full forward and free taker had many chances to cut the deficit from deadball situations but was unable to convert.

A point from Paddy Regan and a second Colin Dunne effort were enough to leave Knockbeg 1-5 to 0-2 ahead at the interval.

The resumption of play saw Mullingar CBS come out a different side, a quick goal from a free and four points left the game hanging in the balance at 1-7 to 1-6 in favour of Knockbeg after 12 minutes.

Another score From Mullingar levelled the game at 1-7 apiece, Knockbeg replied to go back ahead but a double from CBS left them trailing by a point mid-way through the second half.

Knockbeg recovered though with Ross Bolger and Ian Shanahan both pointing to give them a one point advantage as the game ticked towards full time.

However, Mullingar equalised with virtually the final kick to send the game to extra time with the score at 1-11 each.

From there, Mullingar went back into the lead at the start of extra time and were two ahead at the interval.

They maintained that advantage until the end to keep Knockbeg out.
